Dalat Travel Guide

Bustling streets, rich history, and incredible food—Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC), formerly known as Saigon, is Vietnam’s largest and most vibrant metropolis. Here’s a concise guide to help you make the most of your visit, covering must-see attractions, where to stay, and essential travel tips.

How Long & Where to Stay

To experience HCMC properly, spend at least 3 nights—giving you two full days:

  • Day 1: Explore the city’s highlights (itinerary below).
  • Day 2: Visit the Cu Chi Tunnels, a historic underground network from the Vietnam War.
  • 🛬 Arrival & Departure Days: Stroll through the city, visit cafes, or explore local markets.

Got extra time? Consider a 2-day, 1-night trip to the Mekong Delta* (highly recommended!).

Where to Stay:

I stayed at Full House Hostel* – a budget-friendly option with small but comfortable rooms, a shared kitchen, and the best part: a rooftop terrace. If you’re looking for different options:

  • Budget: Full House Hostel, The Hideout Hostel
  • Mid-Range: Silverland Yen Hotel
  • Luxury: Hotel Des Arts Saigon

HCMC One-Day Itinerary

Here’s a packed yet manageable itinerary for a full day in the city:

Morning:

  • Tao Dan Park – A peaceful park to start your day.
  • 🏛️ War Remnants Museum – A powerful but one-sided account of the Vietnam War. Research beforehand for a balanced view.
  • Notre-Dame Cathedral & Saigon Central Post Office – French colonial landmarks worth a quick visit.
  • 🍜 Lunch: Try a local dish like pho, banh mi, or com tam (broken rice) at a nearby eatery.

Afternoon:

  • 🚶 Nguyễn Huệ Walking Street – A lively pedestrian street filled with cafes and street performers.
  • The Coffee Apartments – A unique old building packed with stylish cafes and boutique shops.
  • 🏙️ Saigon Skydeck – Stunning panoramic views from Bitexco Tower.

Evening:

  • 🛍️ Bến Thành Market – Shop for souvenirs, clothes, and street food.
  • 🛕 Mariamman Hindu Temple – A small but colorful temple.
  • 🍻 Bùi Viện Street – A bustling nightlife hub with bars, restaurants, and street performances.

More Things to Do in HCMC

If you have extra time, here are more spots worth checking out:

  • 🏯 Jade Emperor Pagoda – One of HCMC’s most atmospheric Buddhist temples.
  • 🚤 Saigon Waterbus – A scenic ferry ride along the Saigon River. Start at Bạch Đằng Wharf, head to Thanh Da Wharf, enjoy a drink by the water, then return. (Tip: Buy tickets in advance as boats can sell out!)

Day Trips from HCMC

1. Cu Chi Tunnels

An underground network used during the Vietnam War. Visit with a tour or go independently.

  • 💰 Tour price: 400,000 VND/person (offered at Full House Hostel, Feb 2025).
  • 🏍️ DIY Tip: Rent a motorbike for a cheaper and flexible trip. Stop at Lang Viet Lacquers to see handcrafted art made by Agent Orange victims.

2. Mekong Delta Tour*

A great escape from the city into Vietnam’s lush countryside. I did a VIP Mekong Delta Tour (2 days, 1 night) for €61 per 2 people (Feb 2025).

Tour Highlights:

  • 🚗 Pickup from District 1
  • 🚣 Traditional boat rides & floating markets
  • 🏡 Homestay with rice planting & short cooking class
  • 🌿 Visit to a coconut candy factory & bee farm

Final Tips for HCMC

  • Getting Around: Use Grab for taxis, or rent a motorbike if comfortable in traffic.
  • Food Must-Try: Enjoy Phở at Phở Hòa Pasteur, Bánh Mì at Bánh Mì Huỳnh Hoa, and a traditional Vietnamese coffee at L’Usine.
  • Best Time to Visit: Dry season (Dec–April) is ideal for sightseeing.
